Sealant and caulk calculator: how many tubes
The calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example, formula and figures below show exactly how it works, so you can do the sum yourself. A guide, not advice. Check your supplier's or maker's figures before ordering.
Short answer
Worked example
| You enter | Value |
|---|---|
| Length of joint to seal | 20 m |
| Bead width | 6 mm |
| Bead depth | 6 mm |
| Cartridge size | 310 ml |
Order: 3 × cartridges (720 ml)
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Cartridges | 3 |
| Sealant | 720 ml |
| Metres per cartridge at this bead | 8.61 m |
Show the working
- Sealant: 20 m × 6 × 6 mm = 720 ml
- Cartridges: 720 ml ÷ 310 ml, rounded up = 3
- One cartridge runs 310 ÷ 36 ml/m = 8.61 m at this bead
How it works
- Sealant (ml) = length (m) × bead width (mm) × bead depth (mm) × (1 + waste), since 1 m × 1 mm² = 1 ml
- Cartridges = ml ÷ cartridge size, rounded up
A triangular bead in a corner uses about half the volume of a square one, so this errs on the generous side.
