Lintel length calculator: length to order
The calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example, formula and figures below show exactly how it works, so you can do the sum yourself. A guide, not advice. Check your supplier's or maker's figures before ordering.
Short answer
Worked example
| You enter | Value |
|---|---|
| Clear opening width | 900 mm |
| Minimum end bearing | 150 mm |
| Stock lengths go up in steps of | 150 mm |
Order: a 1,200 mm lintel (choose the type from the maker's load tables)
- Out of scope Lintel type and load Choose the lintel from the maker's load tables or an engineer's spec. UK-wide: Lintel maker's load tables or an engineer's specification. Check with the source.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Length to order (next stock length) | 1,200 mm |
| Minimum length (opening + bearings) | 1,200 mm |
| Extra bearing shared between the two ends | 0 mm |
Show the working
- Minimum length: 900 + 2 × 150 = 1,200 mm
- Stock length: 1,200 ÷ 150 = 8 steps (rounded up) × 150 = 1,200 mm
How it works
- Minimum length = clear opening + 2 × minimum end bearing
- Length to order = the minimum length rounded up to the next stock length (a whole number of steps)
This gives the length only. Choose the lintel type from the maker's load tables or an engineer's specification: the load it carries is out of scope here.
