Beads and mesh: measure the corners, stop ends and the bell-cast line; the render maker's system sheet says which beads and mesh it needs.

Questions for your builder

• Is the wall sound and dry enough to render, and does it need a key or a bonding coat?
• Will the render bridge the damp-proof course? It should stop above it.
• Which render system suits this wall (sand and cement, lime or a through-coloured render)?
• Does rendering this wall need planning permission or building control?
