Flooring calculator
The calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example, formula and figures below show exactly how it works, so you can do the sum yourself. A guide, not advice. Check your supplier's or maker's figures before ordering.
Short answer
Work out how many packs of flooring, rolls of underlay and lengths of trim to buy. Enter your measurements below; every figure we start from is shown and you can change it.
Worked example
| You enter | Value |
|---|---|
| Rooms | Room: rectangle 5 m × 3 m |
| Floor type | Laminate |
| Layout | Straight |
| Waste allowance | 5% |
| Coverage per pack | 2.22 m² |
| Add a spare pack for future repairs | No |
| Underlay coverage per roll | 15 m² |
Order: 8 packs
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Packs | 8 |
| Floor needed (with waste) | 15.75 m² |
| Ordered | 17.76 m² |
| Left over | 2.01 m² |
| Underlay rolls | 2 |
| Room area | 15 m² |
Show the working
- Area: Room 15 m² = 15 m²
- Floor needed: 15 × 1.05 (5% waste) = 15.75 m²
- Packs: 15.75 ÷ 2.22 m² = 7.09, rounded up to 8; 17.76 m² ordered, 2.01 m² left over
- Underlay: 15.75 ÷ 15 m² per roll, rounded up = 2 rolls
How it works
- Floor needed (m²) = area × (1 + waste)
- Packs = floor needed ÷ coverage per pack, rounded up; left over = packs × coverage − floor needed
- Underlay rolls = area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per roll, rounded up
- Trims = (perimeter − doorways) × (1 + waste) ÷ trim length, rounded up
